Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 16, 2026
Last updated: October 30, 2026
Welcome to Outside. Outside is an app that presents weather information through window scenes and animated effects. We care about your privacy and handle information related to the app's features on the principles of necessity and transparency.
This policy explains how we use location and city lookups, weather caches, your diary and optional iCloud sync, app preferences, purchase status and anonymous usage statistics, and how you can manage the related permissions and data.
1. Information we process
1.1 Location and weather lookups
When you choose "Current Location" or a similar feature, Outside uses the location provided by your device, after you grant system permission, to determine where to look up the weather and to show the corresponding weather, scene and forecast. You decide in iOS Settings whether to allow location access and whether to share your precise location.
You can also look up the weather for other places by choosing a city in the app. For a city you choose manually, we use that place's geographic location for the weather lookup.
Outside uses Apple WeatherKit for weather data. To return the weather for the place being looked up, that place's coordinates are sent to Apple's weather service. Apple states in its WeatherKit documentation that the service uses location information to provide forecasts, does not associate location with personally identifiable information, and does not track location across requests. This processing is governed by Apple's applicable privacy policy.
Declining location permission does not prevent you from looking up the weather for places you choose manually; features that rely on your current location may not work.
1.2 App preferences and local data
To keep your experience personalized, the app saves the settings it needs based on what you do in the app, such as your chosen cities, scene, theme, display preferences and weather cache. This information is mainly used to restore the app's state and content on your device. You do not need to provide your name or contacts for this.
If you have turned on Apple device backup or an applicable sync feature, this data may be processed by Apple according to your device settings, depending on the system services you actually use.
1.3 Weather diary, optional iCloud sync and sharing
Your weather diary and saved cities are stored mainly on your device. When the iCloud sync switch in the app is on, your membership is active and the system's iCloud service is available, the app syncs your weather diary and saved city list through Apple's iCloud key-value storage. The city list can include names, lookup coordinates and time zones; the diary contains dates and the corresponding weather records. This synced content is handled by the iCloud service of your Apple Account and is not sent to any server we operate.
iCloud sync is on by default and you can turn it off in Settings. Turning it off stops future syncing but does not automatically delete data already stored in iCloud. You can manage local content in the app, and manage applicable iCloud data and backups in Apple's system settings; purchase records remain managed by Apple.
When you choose to create and share a scene postcard, the image may include the city, weather, date or time. The content is passed to another service only after you choose a system share destination. The current version has no feature for importing your own photos or recording microphone audio.
The sound switch and the time of your first successful preview are stored in your device preferences, to restore your settings and to determine whether the three-day sound trial is still active. This feature does not record audio, and a preview does not create a purchase or start a subscription.
1.4 In-app purchases and subscriptions
When you buy or restore paid benefits such as Outside+, the transaction is handled by the Apple App Store and StoreKit. The app uses the necessary transaction status and purchase receipt information to determine whether your benefits are active, and to provide purchase restoration and access to subscriptions or purchased content.
We never receive your full card number or payment password. Purchase records, subscription management and payment information are handled by Apple under its applicable terms.
1.5 Diagnostics
If you have agreed in Apple's system settings to share diagnostics and analytics, we may receive crash and performance information provided by Apple, which we use to find problems and improve stability. The collection and provision of this information is governed by Apple's corresponding settings and policies.
1.6 Anonymous usage statistics
To understand whether the membership introduction is clear and whether the pricing plans are suitable, the app sends anonymous usage statistics through TelemetryDeck when you open the Outside+ membership page. Statistics about the membership page include only: where the page was opened from, which benefit previews were viewed, the plan selected (monthly or annual), whether Purchase or Restore Purchases was tapped and its result (such as success, cancellation or failure), and an approximate range of time spent on the page.
In addition, the statistics service records summary information such as app launches, the date of first use, and the number of days and times the app has been used, to calculate how often the membership page is opened. The statistics are accompanied by the device model, system and app versions, language and region settings, and some accessibility settings (such as Dynamic Type size), to tell different devices and versions apart. The app generates a random identifier for each installation, which is hashed and used to tell installations apart. It does not include your name, email address, Apple Account, location, city, weather, diary content or advertising identifier, is not linked to your identity, and is not used to track you across apps or websites.
2. How we use information
We use information only to the extent needed to provide and maintain the app's features, mainly to:
- show the weather, forecasts and animated scenes for your current location or a place you choose;
- save your cities, scenes and interface preferences;
- create and, at your request, share scene postcards, and sync your weather diary and city list according to your settings;
- verify and restore in-app purchases and membership benefits;
- keep the app stable, fix problems and respond to feedback;
- understand, anonymously and in aggregate, how the membership page is viewed and how often it leads to purchases, so we can improve the membership introduction and pricing plans.
3. Third-party services and data transfers
To provide weather lookups and purchases, Outside uses the following Apple services:
- Apple Maps services: complete city searches, place-name resolution and reverse geocoding from your search text or a place's coordinates. This processing is governed by Apple's applicable privacy policy.
- Apple WeatherKit: provides weather data and processes the coordinates of the place being looked up. See Apple's WeatherKit page for details.
- Apple App Store / StoreKit: handles in-app purchases, subscriptions and transaction verification. See Apple's Privacy Policy for details.
- Apple device and system services: may process information for optional iCloud sync, system backups and diagnostics sharing when you turn those features on.
Outside also uses the following third-party analytics service:
- TelemetryDeck (TelemetryDeck GmbH, Germany): receives the anonymous usage statistics described in section 1.6 for aggregate analysis, not for advertising or tracking. Data is stored in the European Union. See the TelemetryDeck Privacy Policy for details.
The current version includes no advertising SDK, performs no usage analytics other than the anonymous statistics above, and does no cross-app tracking. We do not operate our own servers for weather, images or audio. When you choose to share a postcard or contact support, the content you select is handled by the share destination or email service you choose. As the provider of the system services above, Apple applies its own privacy policy to information processed through its services.
4. Retention and deletion
The cities, diary, weather cache, sound trial start time, scene and preference settings saved by the app are used to keep providing the personalized experience you chose. They are generally kept until you change or clear the relevant settings in the app, the app clears its cache automatically, or you delete the app.
Deleting the app generally deletes the data in the app's local sandbox on your device, but does not necessarily delete purchase records in your Apple Account, system backups, or data already processed by Apple services. Retention and deletion of that data follow the settings and policies of the corresponding system services.
For privacy requests we can handle directly, you can ask to access, correct or delete applicable information by writing to the email address at the end of this policy. We will handle requests based on the data we actually hold and the applicable law.
5. Your choices and rights
At any time, you can:
- allow, limit or turn off Outside's location access in iOS Settings;
- look up the weather for a city manually instead of sharing your current location;
- manage your diary, saved cities and the app's iCloud sync switch, and manage applicable iCloud data and backups in system settings;
- adjust cities, scenes and display settings in the app;
- view, manage or cancel App Store subscriptions in your Apple Account;
- contact us to make applicable requests to access, correct or delete personal information, withdraw consent, or other privacy-related requests.
Withdrawing a permission does not affect processing lawfully carried out before the withdrawal, but features that depend on that permission may stop working.
6. Children
We do not ask users to provide minors' personal information unrelated to the app's features in order to provide the weather service. Minors should use the app and make purchases under the guidance of a parent or guardian. For privacy matters involving minors, a parent or guardian can contact us at the email address at the end of this policy.
7. Security and policy updates
We take reasonable measures, based on what each feature needs, to reduce unnecessary data access and transfer. No information transmitted or stored over the internet can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
When the app's features, the services it uses or the way it processes information change significantly, we will update this policy and, where needed, let users know in an appropriate way. The updated policy will state its effective date.
